A buoyant smoke signal, also known as buoyant smoke orange, falls under the category of life saving appliance and is a visual aid that draws attention to a boat or ship in distress. Buoyant smoke signals, as the name suggests, emit orange-colored smoke. They are useful at indicating the direction of wind and generally last for around three minutes.
